Choosing Real Nappies

There is a mind-boggling range of different real nappies on the market and it can be quite a daunting prospect choosing which to buy. Some things to consider are:-

Cost…prices between different brands and styles of nappy vary widely. Nappies that are very convenient to use or look snazzy can cost more, so think about what is most important for you.

Ease of drying…will you tumble-dry your nappies? (which can reduce their life and uses more electricity, but is much quicker) or air dry? (takes longer, but this can be combated by having more nappies). Terry squares, prefolds, stuffable nappies and nappy covers usually dry quickly even on a washing line or airer.

Durability…especially a consideration if you want to re-use your nappies for subsequent children. Generally nappy products are of a good quality, but sometimes extra quality can cost a little more.

Fit…a good fit is essential to ensure baby is comfy and their nappy is leak free. Parents know babies come in many different shapes and sizes, and so do nappies – if you find one brand doesn’t give the perfect fit then it’s likely there’s another type out there that will.

Bulkiness…some nappies are a little bulkier than others, some parents prefer a slim-lined look whilst other adore a ‘cuddly nappy bottom’.

Ease of Use…all real nappies are pretty easy to use, but there are some circumstances where you might consider having a very simple to put on nappy – if you’re out and about, if you have several babies in nappies and are changing bottoms all day or for use by a babysitter or nursery.

Appearance…white or cream nappies are not necessarily the ‘norm’ these days - wild colours and jazzy pattern nappies are now widely available, but fashion can cost extra (remember nappies are covered with clothing most of the time).
